As dental amalgam is now being phased out across the EU, interest in fully metal-free alternatives has grown in Denmark too. Our practice in Bad Schwartau, immediately next to Lübeck in northern Germany, sits on the Baltic corridor between Hamburg and the Danish islands, which keeps the journey from Danish cities genuinely manageable.
For many people the appeal is simple: a single practice that works exclusively without metal, has real experience with ceramic (zirconia) implants, and explains every step clearly in English. You do not need to speak German to understand your diagnosis, weigh up your options, or follow your aftercare. We plan treatment around your travel rather than the other way around.
Denmark moved early on this subject: the use of dental amalgam has been heavily restricted there since 2008, long before the EU-wide ban (with narrow medical exceptions) that took effect on 1 January 2025. Many patients therefore still carry amalgam fillings placed in earlier years. 03 Getting here from Denmark
Closer than you might expect
The practice is in Bad Schwartau, immediately adjacent to Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein. Whether you drive down through Denmark or fly into Hamburg, the last stretch is short. Your total travel time depends on your Danish departure point.
Drive & cross the Fehmarnbelt
Drive down through Denmark to Rødby, take the Scandlines ferry to Puttgarden (about 45 minutes, with frequent departures), then roughly one hour onward to Lübeck/Bad Schwartau. From Copenhagen, the Rødby ferry terminal is around 1.5 hours by car.
Fly Copenhagen → Hamburg
Direct flights from Copenhagen to Hamburg Airport (HAM) take about 55 minutes. From Hamburg it is roughly a 45-55 minute drive, or about a 1h10-1h25 train journey, to Lübeck/Bad Schwartau.
By road through Denmark
From Odense, Lübeck is roughly a 3-hour drive south through Funen and Schleswig-Holstein. From Aarhus it is roughly 4 hours by car. Hamburg Airport is the nearest major airport for any air connections.
The Fehmarnbelt link
A fixed road-and-rail tunnel between Puttgarden and Rødby is under construction, with the first elements placed in 2025. Until it opens, the Scandlines ferry remains the direct crossing - simple, frequent and quick.

06 Costs and written quotes
How costs are worked out, in writing
Treatment here is billed under the official German fee schedule for dentists, the GOZ. A quote from us is never a single lump sum: every position - diagnostics, materials and each treatment step - is listed separately, so you can see exactly what the plan contains.
You also do not have to travel just to make a first enquiry. Briefly describe your situation in the form and we get back to you in English with the next steps. The examination, including 3D diagnostics where needed, takes place at the practice; the binding, itemised quote follows it, and you receive it in writing before any treatment begins.
07 Reimbursement
Private insurance and reimbursement
Reimbursement may be possible through a private (supplementary) dental insurance. Please clarify this with your own insurer before treatment - only your insurer can say what your policy covers.
